I was at FUSE last night, a semi-regular all-night event at the Vancouver Art Gallery where they basically turn the whole place into a disco. It seemed like a bad idea to me, having tons of drunks running around the artwork (drinks not allowed into the actual galleries, but nothing stopping people from pounding back 10 glasses of plonk in the outer rooms, and then staggering into the exhibit halls.)
Anyway, because this FUSE took place during the KRAZY! comic exhibit at the gallery, we comic guys took over the east wing on the 4th floor for a big 12 hr comic jam. I brought the Cintiq to get some work done, and try painting for fun. Things got crazy around 11-midnight, when all the boozy party goers started hanging out with us and drawing etc.
Everything ended up getting shut down 3 hrs early at 3am, after some guys got caught shooting up, and some drunk punched some artwork. Woo! Good times.
Anyway, here are 2 of the quickie pics I doodled during the evening.
**edit: My scared bear looks a little like Dean in the entry below. Haw.**

Scott was sayin’ he doesn’t just draw out in public. I just realized it’s probably because he doesn’t have a tiny sketchbook like the one I use.

that crow was sitting in one of those furnace vent chimney things. It was super cute.

just been to lazy to re-install scanner software on my new machine ’till today.
Got sick of the same old pencils and copics so I started trying out some new stuff.

Chalk pastel. I like how it looks but, they suck ass because they get all over your hands like charcoal… which also sucks ass. Smeary powders on my hands really bother me… Welcome to my neurosis.

Oil Pastel. muuuch more my style.

Watercolor pencils. OH MY GOD WHY DIDN’T SOMEONE TELL ME ABOUT THESE THINGS YEARS AGO SO AWESOME.

OH yeah, steph bought a bunch of Color copics. Maybe I’ll try these out. neat.

Gaijin Studios is holding weekly life drawing classes. Despite having a tight deadline tomorrow, we (the husband and I) went. It was a lot of fun, and the classroom is really well set up, with 10 easels and 10 horses, plus a stage for the model. Here are a few of the sketches I did.

I’d like to do this weekly from now on, schedule permitting. Randy hadn’t taken a life drawing class ever, so he had a bit of a learning curve and was frustrated at first, but by the 20-minute pose he was really getting into it. So awesome.

Sorry I keep spamming the blog with life-drawing stuff.

Yeah I know I can’t draw with ink, which is exactly why I make a point to try.

This was fun, My fingers were covered in charcoal/conte and to clean them I decided to try to sketch with it. I actually really like this one.

Even though I was in Vancouver for the week I managed to go to a lifedrawing session. It was a bit different than our setup in Edmonton. More gesture oriented. The model was really good, she had a lot of dynamic poses.
5 minutes in conte crayon.
~One minute with a pentel brushpen
5 minutes in the usual copic greys.

I went to visit a friend of mine while she was painting, she told me to grab some tubes of acrylic and give it a shot. I don’t think I’ve touched acrylic since elementary school.

Sorry about the lame content. I just sorta started slapping paint on the page without a plan. If midnight didn’t suddenly roll around, I probably would have stuck a bird on the other side of the page or something interesting. But, I’m kindof excited that it’s not the most horrible painting I’ve ever seen. I may even try again sometime.

Drawing a bunch of images to have randomly load on my blog when I fix it up, if you’re wondering what’s with all the upsidedownness.

And then my markers started to die.

And then they were dead with no refill in sight.

And then we got bored and started drawing the models as robots.
